Yamauchi Shota and Ozaki Tetsuya Talk: What Is In Between . . . Us?

The 2025 CCBT artist fellow Yamauchi Shota’s Encounters with the Unknown project begins with the question of what is the unknown in an attempt to envisage new forms of communication by exploring relationships that emerge beyond verbal dialogue. The central component of the project is In Between . . . Us?, an exhibition held at two venues. In Nakameguro Park, visitors experience the unknown, while the gallery Aoyama Meguro showcases the process by which the work took shape. As a related event for the exhibition, this talk features Yamauchi in conversation with author and arts producer Ozaki Tetsuya. Yamauchi will describe the background and conceptual development of the project, and with Ozaki confront its inexplicable nature. How can we experience an encounter with the unknown? Is it even possible to experience that at all? The talk unfolds in the midst of such uncertainties.

Project: Encounters with the Unknown
What is the unknown? Starting from that question, this project envisages new forms of human-to-humanoid communication that do not rely on conventional linguistic frameworks. The project will result in an outdoor performance and installation, limning the moment when an unknown entity and human intersect. The unknown entity appears in the form of light and sound, as if alive in the park, and the human body gradually resonates with the light until nonverbal communication eventually begins. As the audience witnesses this process, they encounter a moment when the boundaries of existence blur.
CCBT Art Incubation Program
One of CCBT’s core programs, the Art Incubation Program provides opportunities for creative talent to undertake new projects and makes those processes accessible to the public, facilitating forms of artistic expression, exploration, and action that change our city for the better. Selected through an open call, five artist fellows will act as CCBT partners, developing their projects, making the creative process public, exhibiting the results, and holding workshops and talks.

Ozaki Tetsuya
author, arts producer
Ozaki Tetsuya founded the online culture magazine RealTokyo in 2000, the contemporary art magazine ART iT in 2003, and the online culture magazine RealKyoto in 2012. In 2013, he was appointed general producer of performing arts for the Aichi Triennale that year. His edited works include the photo books One Hundred Years of Idiocy (2002) and One Hundred Years of Lunacy (2014), which provide an overview of human idiocy and lunacy in the twentieth century. His writings include What is Contemporary Art? (2018) and To Not Kill Contemporary Art (2020). In 2019, Ozaki was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres Chevalier. His new book, tentatively titled Duchamp’s Dice, is scheduled for publication in autumn 2026.

Yamauchi Shota
Artist
Born in 1992, Yamauchi Shota completed graduate studies in new media at Tokyo University of the Arts. He explores the relationship between the self and the world as well as the cracks that open up in reality and fantasy. In addition to moving image, sculpture, and performance, his transmedia practice has recently encompassed installations that use smell.
